It was dark, and even though I didn't want to go back out into thenight, my love for my dog forced me to - for you see I had discovered my cupboard was bare, and if Dottie was to have supper before going to bed, I must take a trip to Mama's house to borrow some kibbles.Of course it would be crazy toexpect me to walk, so I cranked up my buggy and started out with one of those enthusiastic jump starts I'm sure you've all had the pleasure of experiencing while riding with me on a hurried errand. Now one thing to keep in mind is that here in critter patch the roads are well used and rarely under construction so needless to say they aren't exactly smooth. They look a lot like a dirt and gravel structure that some one decided to tare down with a lopsided plow towing a wrecking ball.As I rounded the corner and jumped out of the first pot hole my lights flickered briefly on two shiny beads then disappeared until I came in for the landing. As my bumper touched down I saw them again now much larger and realized I was crashing toward a very round furry object. It is hard to brake in mid air but I gave it a try and perhaps slowed down a fraction but not enough, My stomach tightened as I recognized this creature and knew it would lay down and play dead instead of moving and well, that would be curtains for the little fella. So much for what I thought I knew, as I closed in the fur ball sprang into action and none to soon. Now everything went into slow motion as I took in the sight before me. It was for a moment suspended in air its feet and tail being all that moved then suddenly it began to tumble forward in a wobbling rolling motion that looked for world like a very, shall we say "substantial" person laying on a surf board and madly flailing about as a huge wave picked him up from behind and hurled him to shore. The possum's long pink tail spun around like a propeller and his furry rump just kinda rolled along looking like it would boil over his head and crash down in front of him.Even though I felt empathy for the panicked possum my mirth won out and I began to laugh so hard my eyes fogged over.It continued to roll down the road in front of me until I got my self and the car under control enough to stop, and give it time to figure out it needed to move sideways and not just forward.I'll bet he will have a story of death defying heroism to tell to his tribe when he gets home tonight, but I'm sure he 's glad they didn't witness it.When I arrived at mama's house and relayed the experience, she said, "yeah well,he was headed to my house for kibbles too, he eats the cats food every night and the silly thing just lays there and watches him do it.I hope you scared him out of these parts."The fact is the only thing I scared him out of was his fur, I'm sure he'll be back tomorrow even if he has to come in the buff.
Home safely now, Dottie's got her kibbles and I had my laugh - mission accomplished.
