Mighty Grass

Spring is starting to tease us with it's warmth and blossoms. It's hard to stay inside and get anything done.

My brother and I took a walk on his newly graveled driveway recently. The gravel is a very fine gravel but was laid down fairly thick. As we walked along, I noticed that occasionally there would be a little mound in the gravel. It almost looked like a mole or something had been tunneling under it. My brother must have noticed it too, because he stopped and kicked at one of the mounds. We both stopped and stared in amazement at what he uncovered. There beneath the gravel was a little light green blade of grass. It must have seen some light filtering through and began to grow toward it. It grew with such fervor that it began to break up the surface of the driveway. My brother seemed annoyed at the persistence of the grass, but I was delighted, it struck a chord within me. That little shoot of living green holds a beautiful lesson of truth for us.

Life can be so hard, it can seem sometimes as if I am buried alive under it's weight. It can be dark and heavy, smothering and crushing. I have wondered, how can I stand strong when life throws such obstacles in my way? How can I, the weak bendable person that I am, stand up to the attacks of Satan, and overcome his temptations? I look back at my failures and the future looks bleak. But this little blade of grass tells a story of strength and victory. Grass is weak, easily crushed beneath our feet, and yet it can push through gravel even bust a hole in concrete, How? The answer lies in it's purpose. What is it reaching for? It is growing toward the light. It gets it's strength, not from within it's self but from God who made it. God calls it to grow toward the light and He gives it the power to obey His command. The grass need not try to grow, it merely needs to focus on the light.

This is the secret my friends. Instead of focusing on the obstacles we need to focus on God. He is our creator and has promised not to give us more than we can handle, with His help.

We can trust Him with our mountains, valleys, storms and pitfalls. He will safely carry us through and help us to grow into His likeness so long as we stay focused on Him.
